Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) £45.00 is a new imaging technique that provides unprecedented high resolution and cross-sectional images of the eye. The OCT scan enables earlier detection of harmful ocular conditions; this is because it allows the optometrist to view the microstructures of the eye to be imaged and shows different colour-coded layers of the retina. It is particularly useful in the diagnosis and management of eye conditions such as Glaucoma, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and vitreo-macular traction syndrome. It has in fact become a gold standard in monitoring age-related macular degeneration. The OCT scan will give an initial baseline scan of the layers of the healthy eye which can then be used for continual trend analysis of the retina at each appointment, monitoring for any changes that could occur and this in turn aids early diagnosis of health threatening conditions.
An OCT scan is completely painless and non-invasive and it is a great way for patients to gain a better understanding of their eye condition and for all patients to gain peace of mind that their ocular health has been inspected in detail.
