Pendleburys was originally established in Maidstone in 1930 and combined with The Alison Wells Contact Lens Practice in 1999 but remains in the original location of Pudding Lane. The practice is headed and run on a daily basis by two of the Directors Rebecca Lewis, Optometrist and Alison Wells, Dispensing Optician.
At Pendleburys both NHS and Private patients are welcome, we have three consulting rooms, two upstairs with air conditioning and one downstairs with disabled access. There is also disabled parking outside the practice, but please check the signage carefully.
Pendleburys is a friendly and professional independent family practice with a special interest in ophthalmology and contact lenses. We hold out-patient clinics on behalf of the hospital and have been since the birth of the community ophthalmology team in 2005- this means that two of our optometrists are also OPwSI’s (Optometrist with Special Interest in Ophthalmology) -having additional qualifications enabling them to hold clinics for patients who have been referred by G.P’s and other optometrists to NHS hospital consultants. Hospital referrals are triaged here to assess whether a consultant appointment really is necessary thus saving the consultant ophthalmologists appointment time and therefore cutting down waiting list times for those really needing to be seen. We also have a special interest in contact lens fitting, however complex and we currently run a regular Diabetic screening Clinic for Paula Carr. We will also be running a private Dry Eye clinic from 2015.
We use the same (ophthalmologist preferred ) instrumentation as the hospital for Visual Field screening (Humphrey Field Analyser) and Pressure tests (Applanation Tonometry) as part of our full and comprehensive professional eye examination*.

At Pendleburys our priority is the clinical welfare of our patients ensuring all patients are given the amount of time deemed clinically necessary in the consulting room and following through with ‘one to one’ professional advice from our Dispensing team should spectacles or frame adjustment be needed.
Not everybody who attends for sight test will be in need of spectacles but for those who do, we have friendly, approachable, professional and caring staff to assist our patients in making an informed choice with regard to their eyewear. In addition if only a comfort adjustment to the existing glasses is needed at your appointment or anytime, we are always happy to help.
Our patients are warmly welcomed, never rushed and can have confidence and trust in our professional expertise and experience. We carry a vast and diverse selection of frames to cater for all tastes, age groups and fittings for our patients to choose from. In the unlikely event that we do not have what you are looking for we have access to many full catalogues of additional styles and we are always happy to order a few frames in on approval to assist. Our Dispensing staff will always offer caring, honest, professional advice on frame style, fit and colour; they will also explain fully about the choice of spectacle lens options available to you, for the prescription and lifestyle you have. We can also take photographs and video to assist you with frame selection plus we have interactive Apps from both Nikon and Essilor (Varilux) which demonstrate differences in lens types and thicknesses of lens with the use of different lens materials.
Our contact lens patients form a big part of our patient base, with about 40% of our patients choosing to wear contact lenses. At Pendleburys patients can attend Mon- Sat for contact lens appointments. We do not employ the services of a part-time contact lens optician so that we can run clinics just at times to suit us! We offer appointments each day for the convenience of our patients. Our optometrists take all contact lens appointments which means our patients are always seen by the more highly qualified professional, who can assist with all their clinical needs not just contact lenses, thus providing better continuity of care for our patients.
Children and Families– Are most welcome to Pendleburys, in fact given that Pendleburys was established 84 years ago, some of our oldest patients starting coming here from childhood and have stayed with us. We offer child appointments on any day and DO NOT restrict which days or times of day we offer children appointments. Children may be booked in anytime including Saturdays and after school or on the same day as parents and siblings as a block booking.
Cancellation Policy– For all private appointments booked, we require 24 hours notice of cancellation to avoid a missed appointment fee being charged. We do appreciate knowing in advance if you cannot attend as we often have patients waiting for cancellation slots and this enables us to offer the appointment to another patient.
